MAGXiriCEXCK OP THK PAIACB.- Another writer, after relating the circumstan ces of the capture and sacking of the. palace, says : description can give an idea oi the splen- dor of this residence. The entrance or reception hall is paved with marble, and I painted with gold, azure, and scarlet i n, the most gorgeou3 style. 1 he throne of the Lmperor is or beauti ful carved dark wood, and the cushions, em broidered with gold dragons, attracted general admiration : every inner chamber and saloon was very handsomely, fitted up, and the rolls of silk, satin, and crapes, all of splendid workman ship, splendidly furnished cummerbunds and pungarees for the French soldiers, who appear to have adopted our custom: in this respect. Ihe jade stone; and cmna were of great value, and some Sevres china of Louise Quatojze would have delighted, the eyes of many a curio fancier: and a presentation Sword with the English coat of arms, studded , with gems, and evidently of antiquity, gave rise to some speculation. The last treatyv of Tien-tsin was also found, and the immense quantity oi loot oi ail Kinas maae it almost impossible to know what to take away. Some idea of the quantity of silk may be giv en by the fact that fowls, old pots, &c, were wrapped in the most costly silks and satins. All the ladies had disappeared, bjftttheir little Japanese dogs, something resembling a King Charles spaniel, were running abqnt in a dis tracted state: Some valuable books and papers were secured for the British Museum. ' THB PRISONERS OF THE CHUTES E. A portion only of the English and French prisoners, treacherously captured some time pre viously by the Chinese had been .released, and the fate of the others- was unknown. We ex tract the following on this subject from an offi cial letter "At the time of closing , my letter, .written from the camp at Pa-li-chlao, on the 23d of last month,' I was induced, in consequence of the confident anticipations to that effect entertained by aU those who were aware of the naturoof the communication that had just been received from the newly appointed Imperial Commission er, the Prince of Kung, to1 express strong hopes that, before 'the I departure of the present mail, the whole of the party made ..prisoners on the 18th ultimo would be liberated and have joined our camp.
